We met on Okcupid in 2013. Chad struck up the conversation first, and conversation led to an exchange of numbers. Matt knew Chad wasn't just another boy looking for some action (i.e. "Hey handsome, love your pics") when his thoughtful first message showed he actually read Matt's profile, and that we had several similar interests.
Our first date was at Bryant Park Grill on April 17, 2013, where we had an overpriced glass of wine before ditching the place for a rooftop gay bar, which was more our speed. It felt good that we didn't have to pretend to be fancy and just be able to relax on a rooftop.
The Proposal: April 20, 2017
Chad is an accountant, and gets very stressed during busy season, so we always like to plan a little getaway right after the season ends in mid-April. We planned a 2 week Eurotrip that we were super excited about with a very detailed google doc describing each day. I had known for quite a while that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this man, so I thought the trip would be the perfect opportunity to make it official. I purchased a beautiful David Yurman bracelet to pop the question with (Chad isn't a ring person), and contacted our London hotel to help me with the proposal. I upgraded our room to a suite, and had hotel staff set up the room while we were out sightseeing. Throughout the day, I was FREAKING out. The bracelet was in my pocket. I knew the room was set. We got back to change before dinner, and Chad didn't notice the setup in the bedroom. He sat on the couch in the living room, kicked his shoes off, and turned on the TV. I'm crapping my pants. Finally he goes into the bedroom to see a trail of rose petals to the bed, where 70 pictures of us were arranged in the shape of a heart, with a bottle of champagne on ice. He turned around, and I got down on one knee, then I blacked out. I just remember kissing and hugging him and being so relieved it was over and that he said yes! We popped the bottle, took some pics, and had FaceTime call with each of our parents. Then we had dinner and danced the night away in London's gay neighborhood. When we got to Paris, we went to David Yurman there and Chad bought me my own bracelet (slightly different, we already have enough people saying we look like brothers...)
We had been walking around London what seemed like FOREVER. I was a tad crabby and all I wanted to do was lay on the couch and watch tv. We came back to the hotel and I beelined for the couch. About 30 minutes after getting back to the hotel, I went into the bedroom bathroom to take out my contacts and saw a line of rose petals leading to the bed. From the moment we checked in I felt a weird vibe from the hotel staff but chalked it up to them wanting a 5 star review. I thought that was a lot of work to get a good review and then saw a bunch of photos of us in the shape of a heart on the bed. At that point I was freaked out at the lengths the hotel staff would go and turned around to tell Matt we were leaving and he was on one knee. I obviously was shocked and not expecting it but it was the best surprise of my life. In hindsight, I should have seen the signs. Number one being he upgraded us to a suite...out of character for my budget conscious fiance.
